RADIATION SAFETY TRAINING
FOR RADIOISOTOPE USERS

October 2014

Radiation safety training is required for all individuals who use radiation sources of any kind.  Responsible Users must ensure that all individuals working under their authorization receive instruction on all aspects of radiation sources, biological effects and risks, safe handling techniques, proper use of safety and monitoring devices, conditions of licenses and regulations, and responsibilities and rights of individual radiation users.

General Radiation Safety training consists of two parts: Online and Hands-on. The Online portion must be completed before you will be able to register for the Hands-on portion of the training. Both parts must be completed before you will be allowed to use radioactive materials.

The link at the top of the page will take you to the Online portion of the training. A quiz follows the presentation of the Online material. You may refer back to the training material at any point in the quiz. The online training and quiz will take about 2 hours to complete. You may quit and return at a later time to complete the Online training.

Once you have completed the web based training and quiz you will be prompted to register for the interactive Radioactive Materials Safety Class (RMSC).  You must complete the online portion to be eligible to  attend the RMSC. You will receive confirmation of your registration via e-mail.

The RMSC interactive (Hands-on) session will be a 2 ½ hour training that addresses radioactive material handling techniques, practical methods of control (inventorying, disposal and spill) and orientation to the University's Safety requirements.  Upon completion of this session there will be a final quiz. This final quiz will cover information presented during both the Online and Hands-on sessions. After successful completion of both portions you will receive a certificate documenting your training. If a passing score is not obtained, the Hands-on portion must be repeated.

The RMSC will be offered monthly unless demand dictates a more frequent offering.  There is tentatively 1 class offered per month, check postings for dates as they come up. Additional dates will be scheduled as needed.
